A home plays a profound role in shaping the richness of our daily lives. From furniture and curtains to the clothes we wear, our lives are supported by textiles. At the same time, textiles are consumed in vast quantities every day. Using materials for as long as possible—and without waste—was once second nature to us before the Industrial Revolution, when cloth was an indispensable part of life. Today, we believe that treating things with care and using them over time leads to true richness.

Seat Pad R is a circular cushion designed to accommodate a wide variety of settings and chair types. Its minimal form allows it to adapt to different seat shapes, be arranged in a row on a bench, or be used on the floor like a zabuton.
The reverse side features a fabric that provides a secure grip when seated, regardless of the chair surface. In addition, an elongated tag attached at a single point allows for convenient hanging storage.

This piece is an art object crafted from upholstery-grade textiles with a refined, tactile feel. ポーチはテーブルの上に置かれることが多いのではないでしょうか。カバンに入れる物という意識を変え、毎日持ち出し可能な小さな家具という視点でポーチを再定義しました。長く寄り添うものは、なにげなく、シンプルで目立たず、時々で用途を変えながら使われるもの。家具のように何十年と耐える生地だからこそ、テキスタイルそのものを感じるデザインに仕上げました。
A pouch is often placed on a table rather than staying inside a bag. By shifting this perception, we redefined the pouch as a small piece of furniture—an item you can carry with you every day. Objects that stay with us for a long time tend to be understated, simple, and unobtrusive, adapting their use depending on the moment. Because the fabric we use is durable enough to last for decades, much like furniture, we designed the pouch in a way that allows you to fully experience the textile itself.

MELLEM products are crafted using textiles from Kvadrat, Denmark.
Kvadrat’s fabrics are created through a design philosophy that considers durability over several decades and through collaborations with outstanding designers, resulting in textiles that are both beautifully refined and exceptionally tactile.
Beyond their design excellence and durability, Kvadrat—whose primary material is wool—operates under a rigorous and comprehensive management system. From the care of each sheep on the farm, to water and energy management, and further to collection and recycling systems, every step reflects deep environmental consideration.
Through these efforts, Kvadrat continues to produce textiles trusted worldwide, contributing to the realization of a sustainable and enriched society.

例えば、スケールの大きい建築用に織った生地では、端布といえども小さなプロダクトを作るには十分な量になります。視点を変えれば多様に使用できるファブリックの柔軟性と可能性を見出し、無駄の少ないものづくりを目指しています。

Textures to see, touch and feel. Sustainable manufacturing within the local community. Beautiful designs built to last. The Danish design philosophy—which seeks richness and is imbued with a wealth of wisdom and ingenuity—is very much alive in KVADRAT’s fabrics. MELLEM uses these KVADRAT fabrics and, in collaboration with craftspeople from the Seto Inland Sea region, creates products that enhance everyday life.
Furthermore, our product range includes a series that utilises fabrics originally intended for architecture and interiors, as well as offcuts that were not used during distribution. The offcuts from fabrics intended for architectural spaces are always sufficient for creating small products. By shifting our perspective, we discover the flexibility and potential of fabrics that can be used in diverse ways, aiming for a manufacturing process with minimal waste.
Based in the Seto Inland Sea region—a hub for local industries related to weaving and sewing, such as tabi socks, gloves, towels and denim—MELLEM seeks to connect the community through craftsmanship that preserves traditional techniques, whilst bringing Danish design philosophy into everyday life.

KVADRAT’s beautiful, hard-wearing and durable fabrics are designed to withstand years of use, even in buildings and interiors frequented by large numbers of people. The design process takes into account not only the users, but also the manufacturing environment and the local communities where raw materials are sourced, ensuring that production activities enrich the lives of everyone involved. Led by Hans Wegner’s Y Chair, Denmark boasts a wealth of long-lasting products that have remained in production for over half a century. Products that are cherished by consumers over the long term are also a source of pride for their creators. MELLEMが拠点とする香川県丸亀市は、中世に塩飽水軍の拠点とされた地域で、造船や操船に優れ、江戸時代には水運によって、朱印船貿易や北前船の運航で莫大な富を築きました。バイキングの拠点として歴史の残るデンマークとも、地域発展の成り立ちでは共通点も多く、島々を眺める風景も似ています。
私たちの「MELLEM」とは、デンマーク語で「間」を意味しています。ディストリビューションハブとして発展した丸亀の歴史的アイデンティティーを指針として、デンマークKVADRATのファブリックを用いたオリジナルプロダクトを、日本各地に届け、シンプルで心地よい暮らしを届けていきたいと考えています。
Marugame City in Kagawa Prefecture, where MELLEM is based, was a stronghold of the Shiwaku Naval Forces in the Middle Ages. Renowned for its shipbuilding and navigation skills, the city amassed immense wealth during the Edo period through waterborne trade, including the Red Seal Ship trade and the operation of Kitamae ships. It shares many similarities with Denmark, a country steeped in history as a Viking stronghold, in terms of the development of the region, and the scenery overlooking the islands is also reminiscent of Denmark.
Our name, ‘MELLEM’, means ‘between’ in Danish.Guided by Marugame’s historical identity as a distribution hub, we aim to deliver original products made using fabrics from the Danish brand KVADRAT to all corners of Japan, bringing a simple and comfortable lifestyle to people’s homes.
n the same way as the Marugame uchiwa, we aim to inherit the identity that has long connected places of daily life with their places of origin. In today’s globalised world, we seek to consider the nature of manufacturing rooted in the local community and to create a business that enriches people through the use of these products.
丸亀うちわは伊予の竹、土佐の和紙、阿波の糊が水路や陸路で丸亀に集まり、うちわに加工されて流通しました。江戸時代、四国一帯の産業の痕跡を残すプロダクトです。
明治に入り、瀬戸内地域一帯のものづくりは、近代工業化によって繊維産業が発展し、四国では東かがわ市の手袋、阿波足袋や履物、今治タオル、岡山広島ではデニムや帆布などが展開し、現在でも広く流通しています。
丸亀うちわのように、暮らしの場と産地を繋いできたアイデンティティーを受け継ぎ、グローバル化する現代において、地域に根ざしたものづくりのあり方を考え、使うことで豊かになる事業を目指しています。
Marugame uchiwa fans were produced by gathering bamboo from Iyo(Ehime pref), washi paper from Tosa(Kouchi pref) and starch from Awa(Tokushima pref)—all transported to Marugame by water and land—which were then processed into fans and distributed. They are a product that bears witness to the industrial heritage of the entire Shikoku region during the Edo period.
With the advent of the Meiji era, the textile industry in the Seto Inland Sea region developed alongside modern industrialisation. In Shikoku, this led to the production of gloves in Higashikagawa City, Awa tabi socks and footwear, and Imabari towels, whilst in Okayama and Hiroshima, denim and canvas became prominent; these products are still widely available today.

The product design studio Kurasu Hito Kurasu Tokoro was founded in 2011. With a philosophy rooted in everyday life, the studio designs to connect makers and users across different regions, engaging broadly in manufacturing that draws upon local characteristics and craftsmanship.
メッセージ
MELLEMのデザインは、できるだけ長く使うことを意識しています。KVADRATと協業したデザイナーの哲学を尊重し、テキスタイルが活かされる端正で質朴なプロダクトデザインをテーマとしました。コペンハーゲンに行ってみると、写真に写る美しい街はそこにあり、実際に暮らす人がいて、そこには日常があります。私たちがイメージする豊かさと、現地の人が考える豊かさはずいぶん違うもので、建物も家具も食器も、直せるものは直し、ずいぶん長く大切に使われているものは少なくない。北欧デザインが好きとか嫌いとかでなく、新旧入り混じって暮らしの風景に溶け込んでいました。なにげなく、長く、無駄なく使い終えることを、MELLEMのプロダクトに託しました。
MESSAGE
MELLEM's design philosophy centers on creating pieces meant to last. Honoring the designer's collaboration with KVADRAT, we focused on creating clean, simple product designs that showcase the textiles. Visiting Copenhagen reveals the beautiful city captured in photos, but it's also a place where people live their daily lives. The richness we imagine and the richness locals envision are quite different. Buildings, furniture, tableware—items that can be repaired are repaired, and many things are cherished and used for a very long time. It wasn't about liking or disliking Nordic design; old and new blended together, seamlessly integrated into the landscape of daily life. We entrusted MELLEM's products with the idea of being used casually, for a long time, and without waste.
北欧から上質なインテリアアイテムを届けることを事業とするCONNECTは、香川県丸亀市を拠点に、デンマークと瀬戸内エリアを繋いできました。瀬戸内の自然環境や風土を活かし、北欧家具を通して学んだ「シンプルで心地よい暮らし」の哲学を形にする取り組みを数多く行ってきました。デンマーク王立アカデミーの学生との空家リノベーション計画、丸亀の離島“本島”の観光拠点「HONJIMA STAND」の設立から、本島の空家を舞台にFritz Hansenとのコラボレーションで生まれた「Fritz Hansen庵」、翌年には島全体に展開した「Fritz Hansen島」、Carl Hansen＆Sonとの「Villa Tomari」など。また、北欧のサマーハウスをイメージした２棟のヴィラを作りました。プロダクトブランドMELLEMの設立もまた、そうした学びから生まれた活動です。
CONNECT, a company dedicated to delivering high-quality interior items from Scandinavia countries, has long served as a bridge between Denmark and the Setouchi region from its base in Marugame, Kagawa. Leveraging the natural environment and unique character of Setouchi, the company has undertaken numerous initiatives that give form to the philosophy of “simple and comfortable living,” a principle learned through its deep engagement with Scandinavian furniture.
These initiatives include a vacant-house renovation project with students from the Royal Danish Academy; the establishment of HONJIMA STAND, a tourism hub on Honjima, a remote island of Marugame; and the creation of Fritz Hansen An, a collaborative project with Fritz Hansen that transformed an abandoned house on Honjima. The following year, this evolved into Fritz Hansen Island, an island-wide initiative, followed by Villa Tomari in collaboration with Carl Hansen & Son. CONNECT also developed two villas inspired by Scandinavian summer houses. The launch of their product brand MELLEM further embodies their ongoing commitment to sharing the insights gained from these experiences.
